water meter
Several signs may indicate a leak within your plumbing system. For example, you might experience an unexpected drop in water pressure or a noticeable increase in your water bill. While these symptoms alone aren't definitive proof, it's crucial to confirm whether there's a leak so you can address it promptly. Luckily, there are simple DIY methods to help you detect potential leaks.
If you have a water meter, start by ensuring that no water is being used anywhere in your home. Turn off all faucets, avoid taking showers, running the dishwasher, doing laundry, or even flushing the toilet. Then, check your meter. You should see either a needle or a small triangle. If it’s moving, you likely have a leak.
shutoff valves
Your plumbing system typically includes two shutoff valves: one controlling hot water and the other for cold water. The hot water valve is usually found near the water heater, while the cold water valve is located at the point where water enters the house or building. To identify the location of a leak, turn off each valve separately and then observe the water meter. This process will help you determine whether the leak is within the hot or cold water line, or if it's inside or outside the home.
hot spots on the floor
You might notice an unusually warm spot on the floor, which can vary in size from a couple of square feet to covering half of a room. This is often a sign of a break in the hot water line beneath the slab.
the sound of running water
As water moves through pipes, it creates a noticeable sound. For instance, you’ve likely heard water running when the toilet tank refills. A similar noise can indicate a leaking pipe. Even minor leaks can cause significant damage to your home, so it’s essential to address them as soon as they're identified.
